1894 Barber Dimes

Barber coinage was produced after the Seated Liberty Dime struck from 1837 to 1891. Barber Dimes are minted in different places though Philadelphia Mint strikes every year. Other Mint places are located in Denver, San Francisco and New Orleans. Different mint branches have limited coinages compared to Philadelphia. Also mintmarks varies and correspond to the mint the coin was struck.

Philadelphia coinages do not have mintmarks. While mint marks S, D and O corresponds to San Francisco, Denver and New Orleans. There are 6 types of punches used to make Barber coinage mintmarks. Barber Dimes 1894 struck in San Francisco have fat S with loops and tall serifs that made it almost closed. While New Orleans Mint have used the same mintmarks as the Seated Liberty Dimes having fat sides that are connected by thin lines at the top and bottom.

All the 74 regular series of Barber coinage have the same obverse features of Liberty. The portrait of Liberty faces right and wears a Phrygian cap with 13 olive leaves representing the America`s original states. As well as a head band that have the word LIBERTY. Of all the Barber coinage series the 1894 Barber Dimes are the most interesting series. 1894 Barber Dimes coins have 1894, 1894-O and 1894-S. The 1894 series total mintages in circulation are 1,330,000 with 972 mintages of proofs. 1894-O has 720,000 total mintages in circulation while rare 1894 Barber Dimes have only 24 mintages of proofs and zero mintage in circulation.

Rare 1894 Barber Dimes are the 1894-S series with only 9 pieces left known today and the 1984-O series.
