1897 Barber Dimes

Barber dimes or what are commonly referred to as liberty head dimes were issued in the United States from 1892 until 1916. Created by Charles Barber, the Barber dime was a large hear with a liberty cap on it. He placed the first letter of is last name on the neck. The back side uses the same liberty wreath used on the front with the words `One Dime` printed in the center of it. The Barber dime was highly controversial.

Coin making is a very intricate process. coins are made from dies, which are made of tow pieces of metal. each piece of metal has a design, the date and other information on a coin. A blank piece is put on top of the lower die as the top die is forced against the metal with tons of pressure to create the coin.

It use to take more than one die strike to create a coin, which was a large problem. way to time consuming and the end result was not always perfection. Barber`s design did begin the production of a coin that could be created with one strike of a coin press. Thus becoming an important part of history for the commercial production of coins.

It is said that 1897 Barber dimes are one of the most popular types of dimes collected by coin collector. The neat thing about the Barber dime is that it was made in both the 19th and the 20th centuries. Many thought that due to the lack of neatness the designed possessed, collectors would not be very interested in this collection. However, the opposite has remained true, and collectors seem to flock to the Barber dime set when collecting.
